The idea of holding choreography workshops was brought to the Teatr Wielki in 2009 by Krzysztof Pastor, soon after he was appointed director of the Polish National Ballet. The guiding principle is to give dancers the opportunity for a choreographic debut as well as releasing their creative and organizational initiative. Each year those who want to take part in the project are given free rein regarding the concept, organization, production, and promotion of their own ballet evening using their own resources, receiving the theatre’s technical assistance where necessary.

The three workshops held so far have involved 10 of the Polish National Ballet’s artists: Eduard Bablidze, Robert Bondara, Michał Chróścielewski, Zbigniew Czapski-Kłoda, Anna Hop, Anna Lorenc, Jacek Tyski, Karol Urbański, George Williamson, and Natalia Wojciechowska. The workshops have already yielded some interesting artistic results. For example, Robert Bondara’s When You End and I Begin... from 2009, set to music by Paweł Szymański, was subsequently added to the ballet company’s chamber repertoire. Later, the young choreographer designed a large production, The Captive Mind based on Miłosz, at the Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz as well as being invited to prepare his own original project with the Polish National Ballet. This will be Persona; the world premiere is planned for September 2011 on the Chamber Stage. Meanwhile, Jacek Tyski received the opportunity in 2010 to present his new choreography, In Search of Colours to the music of Grażyna Bacewicz, at our theatre and will produce a larger show on the Chamber Stage in the 2012/13 season. The Polish National Ballet is always waiting for new choreographic talents to reveal themselves.
