OPERA. Not only the deadly serious one in monumental settings. Soap opera on TV. Kitschy. Or silly. More and more political. Opera is no longer an elite art for pleasure. It is a place, which is now more than ever open, where stormy meetings, intellectual disputes and artistic provocation take place. At the same time, according to the contemporary spirit, it is an art branch fully aware of its hybridism and limitations which intentionally unmasks itself.
In the new season, in the cycle of “Dwutygodnik” Magazine’s debates we will try to grasp the current pulse of opera, surpass its classically defined territory and touch the key phenomena in contemporary culture. To do it, we will invite artists, intellectuals, people of culture – not only those connected with opera stages. During the meeting we will look into secrete places of the Teatr Wielki usually closed for public. The cafeteria? The orchestra pit? And what about the government box? The debates will be accompanied by various artistic projects.
What are the links between opera and politics? Is opera subjected to pressure? Does politics give in to opera?
