Tadeusz Wojciechowski


Tadeusz Wojciechowski   Cellist, chamber musician, and conductor, born in Warsaw in 1952. He studied at the Academy of Music in Warsaw: the cello in the class of Andrzej Orkisz (graduating in 1976) and conducting with Stanisław Wisłocki (graduating in 1979). In 1973-1974 he improved his cello skills at the National Conservatory in Paris, in the master class of Bernard Michelin.

   As a chamber musician, in 1973 he won 3rd prize in the Gaudeamus International Contemporary Music Competition in Rotterdam, and as a cellist, in 1974 - 2nd prize in the Dezyderiusz Danczowski National Cello Competition in Poznań. He has also won numerous prizes as a conductor, including, in 1979, 2nd prize at the International Competition for Young Conductors in Besançon, France, and 3rd prize and the Award of the Minister of Culture and Art in the Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors in Katowice.

   As a student in Paris, he was already working with orchestras such as the Orchestre de Versailles, Les Musiciens de Paris, Orchestre des Pasdeloup, Orchestre de Colonne, and Orchestre de Conservatoire. In 1976-1977 he was the concert master of the Polish Chamber Orchestra under Jerzy Maksymiuk, with which he went on several tours, including to Italy, Germany and Britain, and recorded for EMI. At the same time, from 1976 he began his collaboration with the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw as a conductor; this continued until 1983. In 1982 he was invited to the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, and worked as its principal conductor in 1983-1996. Their collaboration continues to this day. He has appeared at many other prestigious opera houses around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, the Royal Opera in Stockholm, and the Royal Opera in Oslo.

   In 1994 he was appointed director of the Polish Radio Orchestra and Choir in Kraków, and continued in this job until the group was dissolved. After that, he was the general director of the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, a post he held until 1996. From 1998 to 2004 he was the artistic director of the Music Festival in Łańcut and the Rzeszów Philharmonic. In 2002 he was also appointed head conductor of the Pomeranian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. He was the artistic director of the Łódź Philharmonic in 2005-2008. In addition, he works with practically all of Poland's symphony orchestras, including Sinfonia Varsovia. He is also the principal guest conductor of the Latvian National Opera in Riga, and collaborates regularly with the Opera House in Munich.

   He has performed in many countries, including Germany, Britain, Luxembourg, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia, Italy, France, Turkey, the United States, Mexico, Colombia, and Japan. He has made numerous archival recordings for Polish Radio and Danish Radio. His repertoire includes more than forty operas and the majority of the world's symphonic repertoire.

   He was awarded a Gloria Artis Silver Medal for service to culture in 2007. Tadeusz Wojciechowski was appointed artistic director of the Sinfonia Iuventus Polish Orchestra in September 2009. At the Polish National Opera, he conducts performances of the ballets Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev and The Sleeping Beauty by Tchaikovsky.
